Warre Hive: Plans using standard size lumber part one

Here are the plans for building the Floor and Hive  using 1x8" (actual 3/4x 7-1/4")

As you can see this is  a shallow hive box @ 1 inch shallower than what its called for in the traditional plans.
This can be constructed  without using power tools.
To avoid splitting  the wood  pre-drill for screws.
To made the rabbit for the top bars, the use of a router or table saw  is recommended.
All the wood joins are glued and screwed together.

When using power tools be sure to follow all safety precautions and use safety glasses.

Photos will follow in a later post.
I will later post the plans for the roof and a hive using 1x10" and 1x4" boards.

Why the white astronaut suit for beekeepers?

Been doing some research on this topic, The best reason I have found is Light colors are cooler for the wearer. A very popular theory is that bee don't like dark colors, for that is the color of bears an skunks their enemies.

My take,  un-dye cotton fabric was and may continue to be among the cheapest fabric around. If you were a peasant you sure wouldn't have the funds to buy expensive colorful fabric to wear when trending your bee hives.

As with many things tradition sets in and the reasons why certain things are done in a particular way are forgotten.

As to light colors and particular white being cooler to wear, there is some truth to that. I see no major reason why not to wear/make beekeepers jacket/suits in other light colors.

How many of us go around in the hot summer sun wearing dark clothing and it doesn't seem to bothers us that much. Think I will start a line of light color beekeeper jackets. :)

Making your Own Warre Hives Using Standard  size US lumber

Making your own Warre Hive using standard US lumber, your dimensions are going
to divert somewhat from The traditional Warre plans. That is if you don't want
to do a lot of sawing.
The actual dimensions of US standard lumber is smaller then what it called.
Ex. 2"x4' is actually 1.5"x3.5".
http://mistupid.com/homeimpr/lumber.htm

In the Traditional Warre Hive plans dimensions are given in cm and in some plans
converted to inches. Looking at the actual plans, the dimensions are all in
whole numbers in cm Ex. a board is  2x21x34. That converts in inches to .78
x 8.3 x 13.38.

One can buy US lumber 1"x8' that is actual = 3/4 x 7 1/4 (1.9x18.4 cm). not
quite 2x21 cm. That is in cm 1.9x18.4. If you are a purist that not quite  2x21cm, called for in Warre plans.

I for one are using US standard size lumber 1x8 inches (actual 3/4x 7 1/4) The
next size that is  commonly  found is 1x12 in. (actual 3/4x11 14) ; That can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot.. Lumber 1x12in is more expensive and one would have do quite a bit of more sawing  to bring it within the approximate  dimensions called for in the Warre. traditional plans.
The greatest difference in using US Standard lumber 1x8 is that the depth  of your boxes; 7 -1/4 instead of 8-1/4 inches. Not a problem using foundation-less frames.

Plan to post some plans for Warre Hives using standard size US lumber and photos in the near future.
